Been busy (and a bit naughty)

Busy times here, so not a lot of making has been happening. There is one project, however,
that has been started... I've screen printed a quilt cover for my youngest daughter (yah!).

It is a bit naughty, though... it's not my design. Earlier in the year a prominent Australian
fashion & homewares label released this design in quilt covers and they sold out so quickly
I only managed to nab a pillow cover... so, I told the little one I would make her the quilt.

I'm hoping it's okay - I mean, they cannot be purchased anymore and this is for personal
use only.

A simple design, but deceptively tricky lining up all those crosses. So glad that's over!
Now, I just need to heat seal and sew it up to honour my promise :)

Have you ever made a naughty copy for personal use? I feel awful because of all the
piracy problems independent designers suffer... but where's the line here? Is it okay
because they are a big company? Is something being 'just for personal use' a legitimate
excuse? What do you think?

    1. Thanks Pippa :) I still feel a bit uncomfortable with it so I'll be leaving it at this one ;) Kx

  3. Hardly call a cross somebodies design...free reign on that one...may be in text/relation with colour they might be able to hop on one foot but I like your cross examination! :)

  4. Personal use is ok, and as you aren't planning to take it further or make any profit from it then its fab. But I understand your hesitation. We see so many small designers have their designs ripped off by large companies it is a problem. We also see many other makers copy peoples designs for their own use (I'm thinking of your blankets here) and not link properly back to the source and thereby implicitly or unintentionally claiming someone else's intellectual property as their own. It does look amazing and I can see why they sold out so quickly. Your daughter will sleep soundly under this one! xx

  5. I don't see it as a problem as long it's for personal use.
At first glance I was inclined to think this Country Road quilt was heavily inspired by Pia Wallén's cross blanket (google that!) but then, the cross pattern is a quite generic one so it's hard to set copyrights around it. Of course, there's design authorship in selecting the size, spacing and color of motifs. But you've stated clearly you are trying to make your own copy as the quilt sold out and you were only able to buy the pillow cover. I think you are totally ok on this one!

  6. It looks great! I think it's okay too, particularly seeing as it sold out and you did try to buy one. I've been tempted to make up my own poster of a saying that I saw on etsy. I contacted the seller to buy one with the Australian spelling of a word within the sentence and she said yes, she'd make me one - three reminder emails and over a year later and I still haven't seen it happen.

  7. It looks fabulous, and I am sure it is totally legit since it is for personal use, and anyway you give them credit for the design, you are not taking that away form them, so its actually a advertisement for them of sorts. They should be thanking you!!xo

  8. I think it is a-okay... on all fronts. I don't think anyone can lay claim on designing the cross. So much of design, and the arts in general, is about appropriation. It's all good with me.

  9. I think it would be one thing if it was an intricate design but the cross pattern is fairly common so I would definitely not worry about it. It's really cool!
